If you’re new to their music, the word “Babahatchie” is a Native American name for the local Emory River in Harriman and means “babbling waters.” The many musicians who participate in the Babahatchie Band are all talented local musical artists who passionately enjoy bringing beautiful music to our community. From popular classics to show tunes to brass band music, their music is beloved by many, year after year.

The Babahatchie Community Band will have their Christmas Concert featuring holiday classics such as White Christmas, Jingle Bells, Sleigh Ride, and many more!

The Babahatchie Community Band Performs For Christmas

For the fourth time, the Babahatchie Community Band played the Princess Theatre.  It was the second time they have performed their Christmas Concert, and a modest crowd seemed pleased with what was presented.

  Mr. McCall Bohanan has been the conductor for at least the six years I've been following them.  Last night McCall was presented with an early Christmas gift from Dr. Joe and the band.  His efforts are great appreciated.

Bohanan does a great job at arranging their music and working with "student" players from the area high schools, and the elder musicians like founder Dr. Joe Williams and his long time friend Dr. Julian Ahler.  Mixing new and seasoned musicians isn't as easy as it sounds, but Bohanan encourages each group to perform at their very best on performance nights!

Bill Farnham and Luther True

Mr. Bill Farnham, narrated the evenings music pieces, bringing his own brand of humor to the presentations.  It's always interesting and entertaining to be in his company.  Bill is also a very talented actor who performs frequently with the Roane State Players.

 

 

Special guest vocalist, Sandy Wells, of Oliver Springs, impressed the audience with her command of the stage and the music she presented.  There is so much talent in our area, and we have yet to tap into it.  There are many more than need to be seen and heard on our Princess stage.

For more than 20 years, the band has performed for Harriman residents several times each year, with popular classics, marches, brass band music, and show tunes.  They perform in the gazebo at Riverfront Park on scheduled Sundays during the summer.  The tuba and euphonium players also get together the 2nd Saturday in December for the annual Merry Tuba Christmas, held at the Harriman High School gym. 

The full group, usually about 30 members strong, was formed by Dr. Joseph (Joe) Williams in 1989.  The band holds weekly rehearsals, which are open to the public and held in the Harriman High School band room most any Monday evening around 8 PM.  

 

 

You are invited to join the band anytime, just show up; they would enjoy your company!

The Princess Holiday Season Schedule

James Rogers is having his Christmas show on December 11th!  I just found this poster on the Princess Theatre website:

This means we have even more Christmas Season fun lined up!

The first movie at the Princess, since the renovation, will be shown on the evening of December 12th!  "It's A Wonderful Life" will be shown for the admission cost of a single can (or bring a truckload if you like) of food.  You have been waiting to again see a movie at the Princess, and this will be your first opportunity; plus you can help the area hungry.  Please come out and start your Christmas Season off right.

The Babahatchie Band will perform, free of charge, on the evening of December 13th at 7PM.  This is a wonderful way to get into the Holiday Spirit!  These local musicians have been performing in this band for over 20 years, and they sound great in the wonderful acoustics of the Princess!

Then on December 20th, the Princess will show it's second movie on its new "silver screen".  "A Christmas Snow" staring our own Muse Watson!  Muse will also be here to celebrate with us that evening.  The admission is just $5.

THE BABAHATCHIE COMMUNITY BAND PLAYS THE PRINCESS

Outside it was cold, the Christmas Parade had just pasted, and many came in to join those fans that came only to see Babahatchie Community Band play its annual Christmas Concert at the Princess!

My excuse for not going was my old legs and back, and the fact I was on them all day!  Not much of an excuse when you consider there were many there older than me, but it is what it is.

Mayor Chris Mason sent me some iPhone shots, and I thought this one was the most worthy!
 

The band is always great, there is no question, so I'll be there when I can.

Harriman Christmas Parade And Babahatchie Band Concert At The Princess

The Harriman Christmas Parade starts at 7pm, Monday, December 16th, and directly following is a free Babahatchie Band concert in the Princess at 8pm.  The parking lot behind Adkissons will be reserved for band members and those attending the concert.  There will be a golf cart shuttling people from that lot to the theatre.

Lots going on, so get out there and celebrate the holiday season!

THE BABAHATCHIE COMMUNITY BAND PERFORMS AT THE PRINCESS

The Babahatchie Community Band performed at the Princess Theatre in downtown Harriman Saturday at 3PM.

There were around 300 in attendance and the band didn't fail to entertain.  The brass ensemble focused on Christmas music, and paused prior to the concert to honor the lives lost at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newton, Connecticut.

The Princess Theatre Foundation was also honored before the concert began, with a plaque of appreciation given to Vera Scarbrough, representing the foundation, by Dr. Joe Williams, who founded the community band.  Together, the groups have been entertaining Roane County at the Princess and at Roane State.

Band Director McCall Bohanan struck up the band and the afternoon was filled with beautiful music.

DON'T MISS A FREE BABAHATCHIE BAND CONCERT AT THE PRINESS

AGENDA ANNOUNCED FOR PRINCESS GRAND OPENING

Vera Scarbrough, who is the stage manager for the Princess Grand Opening show, gave me the lineup for Thursday night's program, as we listened to the Babahatchie Community Band practice on the Princess stage tonight.

When they finished the "Star Spangled Banner" it was the first complete song ever played on the new Princess Theatre stage!  It sounded great, and the Princess acoustics are wonderful!  There is no bad seat in the house; either from a visual or a hearing stand point!

Bill Landry will host the evening, giving the microphone over to Dr. Goff, Jim Henry, Mayor Mason among others.

Of course, as you figured from the opening, the Babahatchie Band will play, as will Dr. Eric Littleton.

Muse Watson and area school children will present "the dream", which is how this all started some 13 years ago!

There will be lots of other music from the Roane Ramblers (Blue Grass from Roane State), the Grand Prees, and several other groups.

All-in-all, it should be a bang up show and a fitting celebration for the fourth Grand Opening for our Princess!

Sorry if you didn't get a ticket, but there will be many more opportunities to be entertained at the Princess.  This, and Saturday night's "Marshall Tucker Band" concert are just the first of many performances coming to the Princess Theatre, in Downtown Harriman.

KAYLA WADLINGTON WILL SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM FOR THE MAY 16TH SHOWS

As usual, The Babahatchie Community Band rehearsed Monday evening for the May 16^th “Appalachian Dreams” stage show. On hand Monday, to practice with the band, were Sandra Copeland Hicks, representing “The Chickadees”, and Roane County High School’s Kayla Wadlington, who will open both shows with the national anthem.

Kayla plays the alto sax in the Roane County High School and RCHS Jazz bands. Kayla, a junior this year, rushed to the rehearsal just after tennis practice. She, and band director McCall Bohanan, conferred for a few minutes and then she ran through the anthem a couple of times with the band. She is the daughter of Randy and Rita Wadlington of Kingston.

McCall Bohanan is a member of the UT Music Department, where he is pursuing a master’s degree in Music Education, and is an arranger of several works for wind and choral ensembles.

The Babahatchie Community Band was founded by Dr. Joe Williams, and he and several of his old high school classmates continue to play together today weekly. The band is a rather eclectic group with member ages ranging from pre-teens to over eighty! It’s a wonderful ensemble that enjoys playing great music together!

Remember, the evening show is “sold out”, but there are still plenty of tickets to the 2PM Matinee at the Roane State Theater. See you there!

THE CHICKADEES PRACTICE WITH THE BABAHATCHIE BAND

Ferrell Winfree and Sandra Copeland Hicks, minus Linda Whitson Jones, the third member of “The Chickadees”, met and rehearsed with the “Babahatchie Community Band” Monday evening in the Harriman High School band room to practice for their upcoming combined performances for the “Appalachian Dreams” show at the Roane State Theater on May 16^th.

The show, to be emceed by Bill Landry, with a special appearance by screen and television actor Muse Watson, will be performed twice that Saturday, with a matinee at 2 PM and another showing at 7 PM. Tickets are on sale now at the Rocky Top General Store and the Harriman Jewelry Exchange in Harriman.
